What Is a Foundry?

How contract chip manufacturers turn customers’ designs into processed wafers—and why yield and ecosystem depth matter.

A semiconductor foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies. It provides process technology, design rules, manufacturing capacity and yield expertise, allowing fabless chip companies to bring products to market without owning a wafer fab.

Foundry, fabless and IDM

A fabless company concentrates on product architecture and chip design, then contracts a foundry for fabrication. An integrated device manufacturer, or IDM, both designs and manufactures chips, although some IDMs also use external foundries or offer foundry services. Packaging and testing may be performed by the foundry, the customer or an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test provider.

What a foundry actually supplies

The relationship begins before wafers enter a fab. A foundry supplies a process design kit containing models, layout rules and verification requirements. It works with electronic design automation vendors and IP suppliers so customers can design for the selected process. After tape-out, masks are produced, wafers are fabricated, dies are tested and the process is improved toward production yield.

Process nodes are only part of the decision

Customers compare performance, power, area, cost, manufacturing maturity, capacity, geographic location and packaging options. A nominal node name does not by itself describe transistor density or product suitability. Mature nodes remain essential for analog, power-management, automotive and connectivity chips even as leading-edge nodes serve high-performance logic.

The economics of a foundry

Fabs require substantial capital investment and high utilization. Foundries spread equipment and process-development costs across multiple customers, while customers avoid building their own fabs. The model also creates dependencies: design schedules, capacity allocation, yield learning, packaging availability and supply-chain resilience can all influence product launches.

Why this matters for Japan

Japan is rebuilding its domestic foundry options while retaining a broad base of materials and equipment suppliers. Rapidus is developing a leading-edge logic foundry model in Hokkaido, while new and existing fabs in Japan serve automotive, industrial, image-sensor, power and other applications. For Japan, the foundry question is not only about owning fabrication capacity. It is also about connecting local design teams, process equipment, materials, packaging, testing and customers into an ecosystem that can support reliable volume production.
